Cracker Factory

Flat Sakerah and Students of Petra 4 Christian High School

Visited Krupuk (Indonesian Cracker) Factory

Flat Sakerah was really happy to do his second project. On Monday, January 31, 2005, we visited Krupuk Factory that was located at Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. From left to right : Sopranita, Eric P, David P, Dra. Canisia Paula, M.M. (Head Master), Kevin J.P.L, Willy N., Drs. J.P. Widodo.

First, we asked permission to the owner, Mr. and Mrs. Tony to have a walk around the factory. Then, Mr. Tony called a guide. He asked the guide to take us around the factory. Then, the guide took us to the first storage room. This place was filled by a lot shrimps. The shrimps would be used as the main ingredients of krupuk.

The second storage contained a lot of tapiocas. Flat Sakerah turned himself into a little child. He climbed a mountain of tapiocas. The guide just laughed. Then, he took us to production room. This room was bigger than two rooms before. There were a lot of machines and selves. The guide told us how to make krupuk. Below is his explanation:

The workers put the material which are shrimps, sugar, salt, duck eggs, tapiocas, and milk into a mixer and mix them.

After that, the mixture will be shaped into some few rolls.

That rolls are taken into some boilers and boiled there approximately for 2 hours.

When the mixtures are cooked, they will be reshaped.

The reshaped rolls are dried up at the field for few minutes.

Then, the rolls are taken into the cutting room. In this place, the rolls are cut into slices by a machine called ‘Berkel’, and then, the slices are dried.

This drying process needs a whole day to get the best results.

The dried krupuks then are packed in the next day. Then they will be distributed in several places.

Flat Sakerah said his thanks to the owner. Then, we went back to school to tell the story to our friends and you.

Batik Cloth Craft

On Saturday, February 26th 2005, I, along with: Mr. Stanley, Mam Isabella, and my team, namely: Eunike, Betsy, Cynthia, Natalia, Lettyzia, Silvia, Clairine, Masyogo, and Fandy would make BATIK JUMPUTAN / IKAT.

1. THE TOOLS, are:

  • Plastic gloves

  • Two 40 diameter pan

  • Plastic basin

  • Wood spatula

  • Cloth pin

  • Chain rubber

  • Marbles/ table tennis balls/ battery

  • Scissors

  • Cotton cloth

  • A litre of water

  • Kustik

  • Asbo

  • Salt batik

The process to make cloth craft is :

After all of tools and the materials are ready, we straightly draw the pattern on the cloth that is prepared (the pattern can be drawn as we like), next, wrap the marbles/ table tennis balls/ battery in a piece of cloth and tie with the rubber until all the pattern is filled by the marbles/ table tennis balls/ battery.

On the other side, we boil a litre of water. After boiling first of all, we put kustik into it and stir it. After kustik is mixed well with water, put asbo into it, stir again well until it changes yellow. After that turn of the stove.

When everything is ready, get two litres of cool water, then put some batik salt into it and stir it well. The patterned cloth is soaked in water about 30 minutes, then press it. Put the soaked and pressed cloth into the first pan and stir it well. Take it out and press it again and put it into the second pan. Stir it well again and press it (when necessary, we can repeat it for three times). Rinse it in clean water for three times, then dry the cloth. After it gets dry, we untie it. When it gets released, iron the cloth in order to get smooth and neat.

Baruadjak Farm

Flat Stanley Goes to Baruadjak Farm

First, we would like to introduce ourselves from left to right: Christian, Astrini, Corry, Steffani, Mrs. Arin, our English Teacher.

On Thurday, 24th March 2005, we were visited by Stanley, the flat boy. He is our new friend. So, we invited him to go to Bandung to see The BARUADJAK FARM – Lembang. We would like to introduce the farm to Stanley and to Others. In there we can see a lot of milk-cows, and how employers process the milk. It is very nice place to visit. It just about 20 Kms North from Bandung.

On the way home, we stopped by ITB (Bandung Technology Institute). This is the college where President Soekarno, our first President studied.

Barongko Cake

The history behind the Barongko cookie

The word “barongko” comes from Bugineese phrase, “buana naroko” it means, the leaf that cover its own fruit. This reflects the characteristic of barongko which is the only one cookie that made with this way (the leaf that cover its own fruits).

Barongko is a traditional dessert from south-celebes, made from banana fruit as the main ingredients. Because we know that south-celebes is one of the biggest banana producers. Barongko is one of the luxurious traditional desserts. In the past, barongko only served for the kings in south-celebes and also served in the special agenda, such as wedding party, birth celebration, etc.

There is a philosophy behind the made of barongko. Like we know, barongko made from bananas and it covered by banana leaf. It symbolizes that how the Bugineese people reception their guess, is the same thing with how they feel. That is pleasure and sincerity of this people.

Well, I hope that you enjoy my “barongko”. But I’ll be so glad if you interested to come here, in my country. Feel the luxurious of barongko and the pleasure and sincerity of Bugineese people. Okay, see you next…

How to cook BARONGKO

Bananas without its middle 500 grams

Eggs 7 grains

Cane sugar 250 grams

Coconut milk 1000 cc

  1. Peel the bananas, throw its middle and weigh it.

  2. Blend the bananas and coconut milk, add the eggs and cane sugar until spread and then put it in a basin.

  3. Fold banana leaf as a dish (fold it like in the picture), then put the dough in it. Close the top with a pitting.

  4. Steam in 30 minutes

Bandung with Syarina

Hi, I am Syarina from XII J, SMAN 5 Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.

Last Sunday,  I took ‘Si Panigaran’ to a public park in Bandung. People in Bandung called it Gazibu Field.

It is in front of Satae Building, the centre of Government Office of West Java. Behind us is a part of Satae Building.

Satae Building is a pride of people not only from Bandung but also from West Java.

This building has specific roof looks like Satae. Do you know Satae? It is specific food from Indonesia.

It is very delicious. Do you want to try? Come to Indonesia and taste it.

This picture was taken in front of Sate Building while in front of us is Gazibu Field.

‘Si Panigaran’ and Me are in Islamic Centre in Bandung. It is not far from Satae Building.

In this place there are a lot of Muslim’s activities.

This building has a lot of rooms and big halls where the conference and meeting for Muslim are held.

The hall can be rented for the party especially for wedding party.

Now, we are in the Lokantara Building, where art performance is always held.

In the announce board we can read that there will be a performance on Sunday.

These two pictures were taken in the other part of Satae Building.

Everybody who visits Bandung always take the picture here.

Beside its function as the Governor Office and the office of The Local House of Representatives,

it is also a unique building and it is one of the historical buildings in Bandung. Don’t miss it if you go to Bandung.

We are in the area of Islamic Centre, in Bandung. It is a large area.

Although the building is new building, the design is different from other buildings.

No building in Bandung designed like this building.

This picture was taken in Gazibu Field. We want to get into the carriage which is pulled by a horse

. But the people are very crowded. They re doing some sport on Sunday morning and some other are busy shopping.

It is very noisy and  crowded. The streets are full of the sellers who come from other part of the city.

We are in front of Geology Museum. It is located on Diponegoro Street not far from Satae Building.

Inside the Museum, we can find many kinds of ancient things related to geology. Beside that we can see fossil of Dinosaurs here.

‘Si Panigaran’ met a little boy who was playing football with his father. He liked ‘Si Panigaran’ and He liked him too.

Banda Aceh- Tsunami

Hallo, I am Febrina. M., a student of Five Senior High School (SMA N 5 Bandung), West Java, Indonesia. I come from Nangroe Aceh Darussalam . Everybody knows that there was the big disaster in Aceh and other places in Asean . But the most victims come from Aceh. At least 200.000 people died . Last holiday, our flat “kuda lumping” and i went to my hometown in Banda Aceh , the capital of Aceh . Most of my families had gone .  The picture is taken in the House of Cut Nyak Dien , the most popular heroin from Aceh . This is the picture of Lumbung Padi . It is a place where rice is put .

This place shows us the people pray for the victims of tsunami . In this place, a hundred of dead body were buried . Those people lost their family caused of tsunami . This is the most sorrow scene .

Flat ” Kuda Lumping” is inside of Cut Nyak Dien’s House . Most people who visit Aceh come here to see this house because it is one of historical museum in Aceh . If you visit Aceh, you have to go to this museum . And you will find everything about Cut Nyak Dien and culture from Aceh .

This picture is taken in front of Cut Nyak Dien’s House . There is a Big Bell behind ” Kuda Lumping” . The Bell always rings when sunset as if it invited people to come to the mosque to pray Maghrib .  Aceh is known as ” Serambi Mekah”  whose people are religious .

My mom and I are in front of the most beautiful and the biggest mosque in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam . It is a miracle that tsunami didn’t destroy the mosque . Although the building around it has been swept away by tsunami . When the tsunami happened, most people come here to save themselves from flood . The building save from disaster, but some part of the building had crashed .

This is the most terrible view that i have ever seen in my life . Can you imagine that this place used to be a beautiful settlement in the center of Banda Aceh . You cannot find the beautiful buildings, schools, hospitals, and shopping centers . Aceh people need much fund to rebuild their beautiful city . But, the local government and together with Indonesian government have trying hard to relocation the victims to the save place . Most children lost their parents and now they are supported and funded by Indonesian government and UNICEF .

My aunt and i are in the the other side of the place above . The place, were my family lived before, now nothing left . After tsunami, there are a lot of people visit Aceh to see the result of tsunami .But they just want to know how terrible the disaster is . Only a few of them understand what Aceh people need .

It is a traditional tools to carry things from one to another place . But now, people rarely use this tool . You can find it in the museum .

This tool is used to separate “padie” from its skin to become rice . This the traditional way that people did in the past . Now, the tool is replaced by a modern machine .

This is the big band in the center of the capital city, Banda Aceh . Some part of it had been crashed caused of tsunami .

This the tower of the mosque which is being repaired .

Nobody believes that the big ship like this was cast away in the center of the city . Do you know why it happened ? of course because of tsunami .

This is the symbol of the grave of unknown that body .

It’s my story when I visited my hometown, Banda Aceh . Aceh people need more attention from the world . Would you become the first ? we’re waiting !

Indonesia – Ampera Bridge

Hi, Friends. I am Abdullah, a student of Five Senior High School (SMAN 5) Bandung.

SMAN 5 Bandung is one of prominent schools in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.

Most students come from other parts of the vast Indonesian archipelago like Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan even Papua.

I myself come from Palembang, South Sumatra. Palembang is famous for its typical  food ‘Empek-empek’.

Musi River divides the city into two halves, it is the longest river in Indonesia. Palembang is also famous for its bridge, called ‘Ampera’ Bridge.

This bridge could move up and down when there was a ship sailing down the river.

But now the bridge cannot function anymore so the  local government  has to make another harbor near the other side of bridge.

Tourists who come to Palembang always visit this bridge. From the bridge we can see a beautiful scenery of floating houses.

We can also rent the boat to take us a long the river.

The two pictures above were taken on the bridge at night. You can see how fantastic it is.

The picture was taken in front of statue of Sultan Badaruddin I.

Now, Palembang is the capital of South Sumatra Province which is led by a Major,

but for Palembang’s people,  they  have local leader that is called Sultan  Badaruddin IV.

Now, ‘Kuda Lumping’ and I are in the Museum of Sultan Badaruddin.

All historical treasures of Sultan Badaruddin I until Sultan Badaruddin III are exhibited here.

Beside that,  traditional clothes which are used to wear for a traditional ceremony can be found in this museum.

Most tourists who come  to Palembang always visit this museum.

This is the first  and the oldest mosque in  Palembang. This mosque has specific design of platform for Imam ( a person who leads  the prayer)

and the place for Ma’mum (people who pray) is separated. The original platform is  still used. It is renovated in some parts of  it.

‘Kuda Lumping’ and I are in the gate of ‘Ampera’ bridge.

Please come to my home town,  Palembang and taste ‘Empek-Empek’, our traditional food and visit the museum and ‘Ampera’ Bridge.

All of you are welcome. We are looking forward to your coming

  4. The colour of the straws for each country should be different but the length of traws should be the same.

The benefits of this activity are:

  1. Students learn to learn to work together in a team work

  2. Students could also remember the map of some countries ( part of geography lesson ) because they learn by doing themselves .
